It wasn't actually a day he was supposed to be working, but of course one of the other officers had to call in because his wife went into labor and he had to be there for her and their child. Darryl Jr could understand that and even respect the man for his duty to his family, family always came before work and anything else in the world and he knew the officer was a good man. So, like any other person hopefully would do, he came into work on his day off to fill in. If that meant he got stuck with the other officer's paper work, well he hardly minded helping the other guy out really.
So for the last few hours since he had gotten there he had been filling the paper work the other officer had had finished along with making sure his own paper work was finished and filled. He was actually really glad he hadn't had anything planned for the day because it meant he could help out, and his daughter was more then old enough where she could keep herself out of trouble and would do so if only so her dad wouldn't be coming to get her in uniform and with his car.
It was a slow day though, one of the days DJ usually would find boring but today it wasn't bad when he had been planning on relaxing all day even though he knew he would have been more bored at home. At least here there were people to talk to and work to do.
open for anyone!
About a week and a half ago a case that she had personally been working on had come to a happy end, even though it was a stressful case in all. The case had been that the biological father had kidnapped his 2 year old son, as he wasn't on the birth certificate at all therefore he had no legal rights to the child and refused to take a paternity test.
He had taken the boy because he didn't approve of his ex getting married to her high school sweetheart, or something along those lines, and didn't want either of them to have his son. But since he wouldn't actually do anything to make it legal, he hadn't been awarded any parental rights. So he had ran with the child.
That was over 5 months ago. He had traveled all across California, crashing wherever he could and claiming he was the only parent the boy had to anyone who asked. It had only been after he had shown up at a relatives house who tipped them off that they got the boy back to his parents, working in part with the police department as he had come back to his hometown after having no more money left to run with. And now the kid was home and safe, and the dad was facing criminal charges.
Even though it was a horrible situation for the dad and Cassie could understand why he had done what he did, the boy's mother loved him and took good care of him so it was a no brainer for the judge to return him to the only parent that had any legal rights to him. And the SFPD had helped that happen, and without bloodshed thanks to one of their cops that Cassie happened to know very well thanks to her family having always been close to his.
So she decided to bring him lunch as a thank you for helping her out, though she had been busy enough finishing up the paperwork for the case and doing other cases and finalizing the adoption for the no longer missing child so he had a step father now.
Coming in with a take out sack from down the street, she headed straight for DJ's desk and sat down in the chair across from him, setting the food on an empty spot at his desk. "I come bearing gifts for one of San Francisco's finest!" She said with a grin.
He was alerted when Cassie Mitchell stepped into the station and asked to be let in to see him, so he wasn't nearly as surprised as he could have been when she came in and sat the take out bag down. He merely grinned at her before grabbing the bag and peeking in. The smell of burgers and fries made his mouth water as he tried to think when the last time he ate was but he couldn't remember. "Damn girl, thank you for this!" He told her happily. He started digging out two burgers for himself and some fries before offering the bag back to her so she could get her food out. He already had drinks in the mini fridge he had tucked by his desk, with a lock on it of course because some of his fellow officers liked to sneak out his sweets and drinks. He passed along a drink to Cassie as he reached in and grabbed himself one and set it on his desk.
Leaning back in his seat with a burger in hand he started opening it as he asked her, "So I take it this is because I helped you get that kid back to his mom? How's he doing?" He took a bite out of the burger, chewing carefully as he waited for her answer, glancing up at her intently.
The case had been unusual and he had been assigned to it when the department was called in. He was lucky enough to be able to get the kid away from the bio dad, even though the guy was clearly mentally unstable. He couldn't imagine what the guy must have been going through being that he was a father himself, but he would fight for his kid with his last breath and he made sure to get custody of her.
